Ontario Athletes Show Promise in Laser and Radial Classes at the Midwinters East in Clearwater, Florida
February 24-27, 2005
On February 24th, 2005 athletes from as far away as Australia launched their Lasers and Radials for the first day of racing at the Midwinters East in Clearwater, Florida. The Canadian representation included 14 Radials (2 of which were from Ontario) and 24 lasers (10 of which were from Ontario).
The first day of racing allowed for 2 complete races to be sailed. Rolling waves with some chop, in combination with fairly light winds and current created a challenge for the competitors and race committee. General Recalls and Black Flags seemed to be the theme of the day.
On Day 2, unfortunately no races were sailed as storms rolled up quickly before any races could be completed, however, it was a great day for dolphin watching as many were spotted swimming along side coach boats and sailors.
Day 3, 1 race was sailed, however, the winds were extremely light and shifty resulting in 2 abandoned Laser races and many general recalls. A sailors banquet was also held where there was a draw for a brand new Laser sail. Unfortunately, luck did not find it's way into the hands of any Canadian athletes.
Day 4, again no races were sailed as storms came in again, but it was a great exercise in sailing in heavy rain and fog. Boats were packed up and and loaded on to trailors, and the day ended with a team lunch in Clearwater.
Top Ontario results were by David Wright finishing 7th overall out of a fleet of 89, and Katie Abbott finishing 34th overall (and top Canadian female finish) out of a fleet of 83.
Thanks to Tommy Wharton, Brian Todd, and Ashley Lethbridge for their coaching support at the event.
