On the completion of Basic Cruising the boater will be able to cruise safely by day in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sloop rigged keelboat of 6 to 10 metres in moderate wind and sea conditions.

Training Timeline
On the completion of Intermediate Cruising the boater will be able to cruise safely by day in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sailing yacht 8-12 metres in moderate wind and sea conditions. Emphasizes on-the-water skills at a level acceptable for bare boat chartering.
Prerequisites
1. CYA Basic Cruising
2. It is recommended that the candidate have a recognized first aid certificate, VHF radio operator's license and have completed the CYA Coastal Navigation.
3. To maximize the likelihood of success a candidate should have experience as skipper of at least ten day sails (or equivilent) and applied the knowledge and practiced the skills taught in CYA Basic Cruising

On the completion of Advanced Cruising the boater will be able to act safely as skipper and crew of a sailing cruiser 8-15 metres, operating by day and night in coastal or inland water in any weather. (Minimum course time is six days)
Prerequisites
1. CYA Basic Cruising, CYA Intermediate Cruising, CYA Coastal Navigation
2. Red Cross or St. John Ambulance Emergency First Aid Certificate
3. VHF radio certificate
4. To maximize the likelihood of success a student should have had experience as a skipper equivilent to at least two seasons or twenty days of cruising and applied the knowledge and practiced the skills in CYA Basic Cruising, CYA Intermediate Cruising and CYA Coastal Navigation.

Training Timeline
On the completion of Offshore Cruising the boater will be able to safely act as skipper and crew in a sailing cruiser on an offshore passage requiring celestial navigation.
Prerequisites
1. CYA Advanced Cruising and CYA Celestial Navigation
2. Red Cross or St. John Ambulance Emergency First Aid Certificate
3. VHF radio certificate
4. Nationally recognized certificate in CPR - level "B" or higher
5. It is highly recommended that the candidate has completed CYA Advanced Navigation

On the completion of Basic Powerboat the beginner will be able to operate safely in local waters as skipper of craft over 6 metres and powered by an engine over 55 kW (75hp)

On the completion of Basic Crew the boater will be able to act as competent crew while cruising safely in familiar waters aboard a sloop rigged keelboat of 6-10 metres in moderate wind and sea conditions by day.

Training Timeline
On the completion of Coastal Navigation the boater will be able to demonstrate the navigational theory required to safely navigate a sailing cruiser in coastal or inland waters. The concepts are introduced in CYA Intermediate Cruisng and Power Standards. Coastal Navigation is applied practically and tested in CYA Advanced Cruising.
Training Timeline
Anyone operating a fixed or portable marine radio in a pleasure craft is required by law to have a Restricted Operator's Certificate (Maritime). Industry
Canada
has delegated the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS) the authority to issue the certificate.
