"Morning Light" Opens in Toronto

Fifteen young sailors…six months of intense training…
one chance at the brass ring.

“We’re not making a film about sailboat racing and we’re not making a film
about a boat. It’s a story about a group of young adults sailing across an ocean,
the obstacles they encounter and the bonds they form. It’s a story about becoming
more than the sum of the parts.”
~ Roy E. Disney, Conceiver, Producer, Executive Producer

“Morning Light,” an exciting true-life documentary, tells the inspiring story of a group of
intrepid and determined young men and women—all under the age of 23—as they embark on
life’s first great adventure.  Racing a high-performance 52-foot sloop in the Transpac, the most
revered of open-ocean sailing competitions, the crew of “Morning Light” matches wits and skills in a dramatic 2,500-mile showdown against top professionals. From their earliest training sessions conducted by world-class teachers through their test of endurance on the high seas, they form an unbreakable bond in the process of becoming a singular team that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Based on an original idea by Thomas J. Pollack, “Morning Light” was conceived, produced and executive produced by Roy Disney and Leslie DeMeuse; Morgan Sackett also produced. Mark Monroe wrote and directed the film and Paul Crowder was co-producer and editor. Patrick Warburton (“Seinfeld,” “Rules of Engagement”) was tapped to narrate the film’s opening sequence.

"Morning Light" opens in Toronto on October 17, 2008 at the Varsity Theatre
55 Bloor Street West

ONTARIO SAILING DONOR DRIVE
SEPTEMBER 21ST - NOVEMBER 15TH, 2008

As our drive gets underway, it is a time to look back at our achievements and forward to the potential which lies ahead.  There are so many opportunities for us to spread the reach and participation of sailing in Ontario as well as build our team’s strength and performance in competition.  The two are so inextricably linked and it is important for the long term evolution of the sport in Canada that we continue to develop both.

We are very grateful for the government funding and corporate sponsorships we receive which makes so many of our programs possible but, this alone is not enough.

Donations make a significant impact on our ability to grow our proven programs, which include:

OST Members Do Well at Laser/Radial NQR's

Ontario Sailing Team members had a great showing at the Laser/Radial National Qualifying Regatta held Oct. 3rd -5th  at St. Margaret’s Bay Sailing Club in Nova Scotia .

Coach Rob Fox was hired to run a team camp September 30th through October 2nd with a team of quality coaches including Regional Training Centre coaches, Paul Davis (Kingston Yacht Club), Dan Cunningham (Royal Canadian Yacht Club) and Ashley Lethbridge (Buffalo Canoe Club) and National Team Coaches Tommy Wharton and Ken Dool.
The athletes from the OST and members of some of the Ontario Sailing Training Centres High Performance Teams were treated to big winds and waves during the training camp and NQR’s.  Highlights of the event included Lee Parkhill qualifying for a National Development Card; Clair Merry, Joanne Prokop, Evan Lewis and Robert Davis will be asked to apply for status on the National Team (both Clair, Evan and Robert could still qualify for cards at a later date); Chris Dold qualified for a Senior Card.

The full results from the regatta can be found at http://www.smsc.ca/.

Our team will now concentrate on the winter circuit in Florida and start prepping for such events next year as the Laser Canadians being hosted by the Buffalo Canoe Club, Laser Worlds being hosted back at St. Margaret’s Bay and Youth Championships being held in Victoria, BC.
