HUB: Did You Know...?

Insurance For Cottages and Vacation Properties

If you’re like many Canadians, your cottage is your home away from home.

Did you know that insurance for your vacation property works a bit differently than insurance for your primary residence?

It’s important you understand your insurance coverage.  Ask yourself these questions when reviewing your policy with your broker:
1.            Does your current insurance policy provide adequate coverage to replace the building if it was completely destroyed?
2.            Does your current policy include Replacement Cost on the building?
3.            Do you understand all policy conditions from your current insurer, including whether you need regular visits to the cottage throughout the year?
4.            Is your cottage covered for collapse caused by the weight of ice and snow?
5.            Are you protected against both theft and vandalism?
6.            Is $1,000,000 enough liability coverage to protect you?
7.            If you decided to rent your cottage for a week would your current policy cover you?
8.            If your cottage is on an island or remote location, does your policy cover the increased cost of debris removal and bringing in new materials should you suffer a fire loss?
9.            What coverage is available for your dock?
10.        Do you understand the exclusions are on your policy?
