North U Racing Tactics
The North U Racing Tactics Seminar is offered as a one day course focusing on Strategy, Tactics and Rules.

Race & Win
North U Racing Seminars "turn sailors into racers, and racers into winners" by teaching techniques used by the world's top racers.  The emphasis is on practical straightforward ideas that will help you win.  The revised curriculum presents the latest in Racing Strategy and Racing Tactics using an interactive multi-media format which allows you to learn and test your new knowledge at the class.

Wind & Strategy
The Seminar teaches how to predict wind, wind shifts and current and then shows how to design a winning strategy from your forecast.  You learn how to make the most of changing conditions through proper positioning on the race course.  And using our exclusive Wind Shift Simulators, you experience the impact of wind shifts upwind, and observe breakthrough insights on the impact of wind shifts downwind.  In addition, you will also see the effect of current and learn proper positioning to take advantage of changes in current across the course.

You will learn how to build a strategy prior to the start, develop a starting plan, and then follow the strategy around the course.  You also learn to evaluate your strategy in progress and then revise or abandon the strategy as conditions warrant.

But that is not all.  Our study of strategy will also prepare you for races when you cannot anticipate changes in conditions (as if that ever happens).

Rules & Tactics
We use tactics to implement strategy.  For each leg of the course we will look at the tactical tools and weapons you need to implement your strategy.  Of course, you can't play the game if you don't know the rules.  The rules shape and control tactics.  The North U Tactics Seminar teaches the rules and their underlying principles.  You'll see how the rules work and understand how to resolve the conflicts and transitions between the rules as positions change.  You learn which positions allow you to keep clear air and control your own destiny, which positions leave you vulnerable to attack, and which positions you can use to thwart the efforts of your rivals.

North U Tactics Book & CD
The North U Racing Tactics book (7th Ed) covers racing tactics, strategy and rules.  Written by Bill Gradstone, the 180+ information-packed pages serve as both a seminar text and comprehensive reference.  The new edition covers the latest in racing technique, including the current rules, in a graphically driven format which facilitates easy recall.  This edition also features insights on wind and wind shifts that will change your understanding of both upwind and downwind performance.  In addition, North U Tactics explores tactical approaches for catching up from behind (just in case you don't lead all your races all the time).  North U Racing Tactics - the most complete text on modern racing tactics.

The perfect companion to our acclaimed book is the new fifth edition North U Racing Tactics CD-Rom.  The course is taught using the North U Racing Tactics CD-Rom.  The CD puts tactics in motion with diagrams, animations, photos, photo sequences, and hours of video! The CD also features our exclusive interactive Wind Shift Simulators and Tactical Situation Maker.  With the simulator, you can set up your own scenarios to learn proper position for wind shift both upwind and downwind.  The Tactical Situation Maker allows you to create and analyze tactical situations of your own design.

The full Tactics Seminar-on-CD-Rom that we use to teach the course is included with the class.  Complete with a voice over by the author, the CD is a great way to review the course at home.

Top Instructors
Not every great sailor is a good teacher.  Our seminar leaders combine outstanding racing skills with years of teaching experience.

Recognize Your Volunteers with an Ontario Sailing-Club Volunteer Award

Every club has them, the unsung heroes who seem to always be the backbone of the club.

Many times they have run the races, helped put the docks in, sent the newsletter out, headed up the youth learn to sail program and the list goes on. In all cases these individuals give of their time, talent and finances for the betterment of the club's community and culture without asking for anything in return.

Ontario Sailing is pleased to help your clubrecognize these exceptional volunteers! The Ontario Sailing-Club Volunteer Award   is, in a small way, a chance for your club, Ontario Sailing and the sailing community to help let our Sailing fraternity say “Thank-you” for your time and commitment.

How does it work?
Clubs are asked to submit the names of up to 5 individuals a year to Ontario Sailing using the application below. The award winners will be set up with a profile on the Ontario Sailing database (if they do not already have one) and a certificate, signed by Ontario Sailing's President and Executive Director, will be forwarded to the club. The names of the winners will be kept on the Ontario Sailing website.

We encourage the clubs to consider recognizing the member at a special event or activity hosted at the club. Suggestions include the club’s AGM, youth award dinner or a major regatta where the individual's activities are being recognized for their on-going involvement.

It is up to the club to detemine their own level of service being recognized in requesting the Certificates. Once Ontario Sailing has been forwarded the request, all individuals will be recognized.

Send completed requests by email to info@ontariosailing.ca or mail to: 65 Guise ST E, Hamilton ON L8L 8B4

Successful, Expanded Summer Youth Sailing and Rowing Program in the Outer Harbour

The Outer Harbour Sailing Federation offered an expanded Learn to Sail and Learn to Row program to youth who otherwise couldn’t afford it again this summer, after a small pilot program last year. In July and August, youth between thirteen and seventeen came from a variety of agencies and centres for week long programs made possible by volunteer effort and financial contributions from the OHSF member clubs.

The photographs here and more photos at the Facebook page and videos -they are really good (click these links YouTube sailing, YouTube rowing, and SNAP a local newspaper sailing) tell the story.  The youth had a blast, were in a totally different environment from their everyday lives, and learned a new skill.  As they say in the videos they would recommend sailing or rowing to anyone else.

Hanlan Rowing Club offered two wonderful weeks of rowing attended by twenty six youth from a wide variety of backgrounds.  They rowed in special, stable fours (quads) that they had been lent, as well as doubles, with all the training provided by volunteer coaches.  Some of the youth did not even know that Toronto was on a lake, but all of them enjoyed it once they found it!  A few of the participants were so good and enthusiastic that Hanlan is considering setting up a scholarship program so that the best students can come back next summer into Hanlan’s regular youth training and compete.

August saw four great weeks of sailing running out of the Toronto Multi-Hulls Cruising Club clubhouse using boats from the three community sailing clubs Westwood, St Jamestown and Mooredale.  The paid instructors were Alex Yardley who teaches adults at J-Town and Janek Kmiec, who had worked with Alex at Harbourfront, assisted on the first day of each week by club members who took youth out sailing.  There were forty different students at the sailing camps the keenest of whom attended more than one week for a total of fifty five student weeks of sailing.  They sailed, capsized, went to Ward’s Island, played cards, swam and had an all around great time.  This year one student got White Sail III and in future years we expect to see more achieve this level as they return.

Next year the sailing and rowing programs will continue, and for the first time there will be ten places for low-income youth in the regular youth windsurfing programs offered by the Toronto Windsurfing Club.  It is wonderful to see the program grow each year.  Information on next summer’s program is found on the OHSF website.

The program doesn’t only give young people a wonderful summer experience, it also shows how the Outer Harbour Sailing Federation can make a difference in the City and how important it is to have the clubs here on the Waterfront.  Thanks to all the volunteers and the clubs for making it happen.

Humber College Sailing Centre Offers European Certification

Are you dreaming of chartering a boat in Europe ?  Are you thinking of sailing in the Gulf Stream warmed waters on the west coast of Scotland, meandering through the canals of France, or visiting the alluring shores of Croatia? If your answer is yes, then the ICC and CEVNI certifications should be a key part of your preparation. The International Certificate of Competence (ICC) provides evidence of proof of competence to operate pleasure craft in Greater European Waters; that is in the coastal waters of the countries that make up the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The Code Europeen Des Voies De Navigation Interieure (CEVNI) provides evidence of proof of competence to operate pleasure craft in the canals and rivers of Europe.

The ICC and CEVNI arise from UNECE Resolution 40. Resolution 40 lays down the competency standards required to be met and other legal requirements such as languages on the certificate. Certificates are specific to vessel type and are available for Personal Watercraft, small powerboat/RIBs, sail less than 24 metres and power less than 24 m. For coastal waters only the ICC is needed. For inland waters, the CEVNI endorsement to the ICC is needed.  22 of the 56 UNECE member nations have formally applied all or parts of Resolution 40. These include ICC: Austria , Belarus , Belgium , Bulgaria , Croatia , Czech Republic , Finland , France , Germany , Hungary , Ireland , Italy , Lithuania , Luxembourg , Netherlands , Poland , Romania , Serbia , Slovakia , Switzerland , Ukraine , and the United Kingdom . Often, even if an ICC is not required, local police, harbour masters and other local authorities understand the system and accept an ICC as sufficient proof of competence even when there is no legal obligation for them to do so.

The ICC is a certificate which may be issued to anyone who has successfully passed an ICC examination.  The ICC itself provides documentary assurance from one government to another that the holder meets the levels of competence laid down in Resolution 40. The CEVNI endorsement to the ICC is indication that the holder knows inland rules and understands the buoyage and signs in use in European canals, lakes and rivers.

Humber is offering refresher training and examination for the ICC certificate in both a weeknight (4 evening sessions) or weekend (Saturday and Sunday) format. To provide the highest likelihood of success, experience or training equivalent to the CYA Coastal Navigation and Intermediate Cruising certifications is recommended.  Candidates may opt to simply attend the second half of the sessions which will focus on the actual examinations. Evening session dates scheduled are April 23, 25, 30 and May 2. A weekend session is scheduled for June 2 and 3.

To register for these sessions, or for more information on ICC or CEVNI certification, contact the Humber College Sailing Centre at 416-252-7291, by email at sailing@humber.ca on by internet at www.humber.ca/sailing.

Ontario Sailors Compete in Fireball World Championships

Two teams from Ontario recently competed in the Fireball World Championships held December 27, 2011 to January 7, 2012 at the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club in Western Australia.  Sailing in a fleet of 64 boats with representatives from nine countries, the sailors from the Nepean Sailing Club gained some great experience, especially in the windy and very wavy conditions which made up the ten race series.  A special celebration was also held at the event, as 2012 is the 50th anniversary of the Fireball, having been designed in 1962 by Peter Milne.  For full results, photos, and video from the event, check out the Fireball North America group on Facebook (www.facebook.com/FireballNorthAmerica).

If you’d like to join us for the 2012 season, which starts for most of us at the Mid-Winters in March, please send me an e-mail, and we’ll get the ‘ball rolling.

2012 Miami Olympic Classes Regatta Report

Key Biscayne Bay, Miami FL January 23-28, 2012

The annual Miami Olympic Classes Regatta (OCR) gathered some of the world’s greatest athletes for a week of thrilling competition. Key Biscayne Bay produced exceptional sailing conditions each and every day. A variety of wind conditions made it challenging for the competitors and truly allowed the multidimensional athletes to rise to the top. Conditions were typically sunny and 27 degrees Celsius with wind from the east, south east at 8-10 knots.

To build the excitement even further, in addition to the great sailing conditions and the hot weather, Miami OCR served as the section portion of the Olympic qualifying criteria for Canadian hopefuls in the Laser and Laser Radial classes.

With the spotlight on the Laser and Radial fleets, Canada and Ontario were extremely well represented in both disciplines. After 5 days of racing, the Laser and Radial berths for London 2012 were still on the table, making the medal race on the sixth and final day of racing a battle royal. Chris Dold and Dave Wright, both from Ontario, showed an exceptional display of skill. In the end, Dave Wright sailed a well-rounded event to slightly edge out Chris Dold and earn the berth for the London games. Congratulations Dave!

Notable finishes from Ontario Laser athletes were:
Dave Wright (3rd), Chris Dold (8th), Lee Parkhill (12th), Tom Ramshaw (20th), Robert Davis (29th), Greg Clunies (41st), Matt Ryder (44th), Evert McLaughlin (46th), Justin Norton (64th) and Mitchell MacDonald (74th).

The Radial berth was well deserved by Danielle Dube from Nova Scotia. The young Ontario squad of Claire Merry, Ingrid Merry, Brenda Bowskill, Bronwyn Richardson, Sam Rae and Violet Stafford sailed hard. Regardless of the results sheet, each individual athlete came away from the event with more racing experience in an extremely competitive fleet, an asset to any sailor in the long run. Keep an eye on this group of girls over the next four years leading up to Rio 2016!

Notable finishes from Ontario Radial athletes were:
Claire Merry (21st), Brenda Bowskill (29th), Ingrid Merry (33rd), Sam Rae (55th), Bronwyn Richardson (57th) and Violet Stafford (59th).

The next events for the Ontario team are the 420 Midwinters in Jensen Beach Florida Feb 18-20, 2012 and the Laser Midwinters in Clearwater, Florida Feb 23-26, 2012. Both the 420 and Laser Midwinters will serve as the second half of the Youth Worlds Qualifiers for Ontario athletes Meredith Megarry and Emily McIlquham (420) and Violet Stafford and Hugh MacRae (Laser Radial).

Hire This "Line-Saver" Sentry for Sailing Safety

"It's Your Call, Skipper!"

What one piece of sailing gear...

could save your boat in a howling gale...

inside your boat slip or alongside a pier,

in a swell-swept anchorage or mooring?

Without it, your sailboat might well become...

just another marine insurance statistic!

Discover one of the cheapest--but often ignored...

pieces of "must have" sailing gear you need aboard!

Hire this Cheap Boat Sentry

Few pieces of sailing gear are as cheap as chafing gear. Dock your boat alongside a pier, wharf, or seawall or inside a boat slip and you use docking lines.

Each docking line connects from one point on your boat to another point ashore (when docked), in the seabed (when anchored), or to another boat (when rafted together).

start quoteIn storms, many boats that go adrift do so not because their anchors drag but because the deck gear has broken or the rode has chafed through...end quote
-- John Rousmaniere
As that line makes its journey from one point to another, it will rub, slide, grate, chafe, scrape, saw, or contact another part of your boat. This might be an open or closed chock, a corner of your hull, a sharp edge along your toe rail, or the razor-sharp side of a Genoa track.

Before the line arrives at the pier or piling, it contacts other "line-killers"--sharp pier edges and corners, barnacle encrusted pilings, or jagged-edged concrete or steel structures.

Once you tie up your boat, check all around for these and other point-to-point areas that could present potential chafe problems. Imagine the tide rising and falling, or boat wakes that cause your boat to wallow alongside a pier or in her slip.

And ask yourself--where will the docking line make contact with an object that can do it harm? All of these areas will require protection to prevent line fiber destruction and failure.

Drop the anchor and your anchor line takes it on the chin--and not just the part beneath the surface. Your anchor line runs from a boat cleat and through a chock on its way to the seabed.

Constant rubbing and shock loads from passing boat wakes, ground swell, or shifting winds means sawing back and forth--and serious chafe! Add in some high octane storm winds and all hell can break loose--literally.

How to Make Chafing Gear Work for You
Make your own chafing gear for pennies on the dollar. Use lengths of old garden hose, clean engine hose, fire hose being thrown out by your local fire department, soft PVC tubing, strips of canvas or similar spray dodger, awning, or enclosure material, or--in a pinch--rags and duct tape.
The easiest chafing gear consists of hose split length-wise, canvas sewn into a sleeve or canvas wrapped around the line and tied off with twine or nylon wire ties (see illustration).

Use the steps below to make up your own chafing gear. The steps show the method for canvas strips, but modify these as you see fit for the other materials described above.

Tools You Will Need:
  • Chafing Gear (from list above)
  • 6" - 9" nylon wire ties
  • Exacto knife
  • Wire cutters
Seven Simple Steps to Make Chafing Gear:
1. Measure the chafing points described above.
2. Split the chafing gear lengthwise with the Exacto knife.
3. Slide the chafing gear onto the line.
4. Center it at the contact point.
5. Wrap the gear tight to hold it in place.
6. Apply nylon wire ties to each end; cut excess off.
7. Monitor and re-center the chafing gear as needed.

Wrap a long piece of canvas around the line so that it spans the fitting by several inches on each side. Secure the ends of the chafing gear with nylon wire ties. Snip off the ends (yellow arrow).
Captain John's Sailing Tip
Check your chafing gear often. It tends to move up or down the line after several hours. Make your chafing gear lengths longer in less protected anchorages for better protection.
