"Thank You Velux!"
Reflections from Tom Bolland, Winner of the Velux 5 Oceans Trip at the 2010 Golf Classic
At the 2010 Ontario Sailing Golf Classic, Velux Canada donated an all inclusive getaway to Charleston, SC for two. The winners were able to see the VELUX 5 Oceans race village and experience a once in a lifetime opportunity aboard the Spirit of Carolina. They were then able to watch the Eco 60 sailboats as they launched into the final leg of the VELUX 5 Oceans race. Below is reflections on this opportunity from the winner, Tom Bolland. The letter was written just after his trip and before the race had ended.
We were very fortunate to join Velux
Canada
at the start of the 5
th leg in
Charleston
last week. My wife and I were lucky winners of a fundraiser for Ontario Sailing at last summers golf tournament. As guests of Velux
Canada
, we went to the best
Charleston
restaurants and stayed at the elegantly appointed Charleston Place located in the heart of Charleston. Charleston has remendous historic charm. If you ever get an opportunity to visit Charleston, I would definitely recommend you take the trip.
Not only did we attend the start of the race but we went to the 4
th leg Awards Night and met the renowned Around the World solo sailor Sir Robin Knox Johnston. He graciously accepted to have his picture taken with us. Velux also included tours of
Charleston
, and a couple surrounding southern heritage plantations. The cotton dock party at the Boone Hall Plantation on the
Ashley
River
was especially enjoyable. Visiting the plantation required taking a step back in time to a bygone era so important to American history and culture. The race stop corresponded with the 150
th anniversary of the beginning of the American Civil War. As a consequence, the city was in its finest form for visiting tourist.
Velux was an extraordinary host. I was curious why a skylight company would sponsor this race. I was told, These elite sailors will face all the elements (wild wind, beating rain, scorching sun and bitter cold) our products face and are designed to withstand. Thru unsurpassed design, rigours testing and uncompromising attention to the fine points, Velux Brings Light to Life whatever the conditions are outside. I must applaud Velux for supporting our sport. They know how to throw a party! Kudos to Velux.
Ill be watching the finish closely. Brad Van Liew most definitely has an advantage if he completes the leg hell win the entire race. His boat is in fantastic condition and he is sailing extremely well. If I learnt one thing during my visit boat preparation is critical to being successful. Gutek and CSM are the young guns in this race. They have proven they have the stamina and skill to sail a competitive leg. They are sailing home and will be tough. Guteks boat needs to stay together (repaired bowsprit?) and hell be challenged to maintain top speeds in the harsh North Atlantic and
Bay of Biscay
. Chris could prove a dangerous competitor on this leg. He is becoming more confident with each day of solo sailing experience and is becoming somewhat a solo sailing superstar with his media openness during this race. Derek is in fine form with quiet confidence. He is such a rock-solid individual and is very well respected by his competitors. He told me this will be his 17
th
North Atlantic
crossing and he hoped to have an advantage in familiar waters, but You never know what youll face. The port calls are very difficult on the sailors this was a particularly long layover and they all were chomping on the bit and anxious to start and complete this relatively short leg of the race.
It has been a long campaign but these guys are great competitors. I would like to thank them for giving us some competitive sailing to follow during our long winter. Good luck Derek were cheering for you!
Ontario Sailing, Sailing School Audit Program
In an effort to improve safety and quality of sailing programs in Ontario, Ontario Sailing has developed the Sailing School Audit Program to promote best practices for running a sailing school in Ontario. The OSSAP is a quality assurance program that will award sailing schools with a rating from 1-5 (5 being the highest) based on a series of standards in the following 5 categories:
The goal of the OSSAP is to ensure that the partipants, coaches and volunteers are continuously safe during the operation of the sailing school and that the sailing school is running the best program possibly according the CYA Long Term Sailor Development model. In addition, we are encouraging clubs to enhance the experience of their particpants by promoting and conducting their school in a manner that is healthy, fair, inclusive and fun.
Participation in the Ontario Sailing, Sailing School Audit Program is completely voluntary.
The rating which a sailing school receives as a result of the OSSAP audit will be posted on the Ontario Sailing website for all to see. Schools will also be able to use the OSSAP rating in their marketing materials. Ratings are good for two calendar years from the date the school was audited.
How Does It Work?
There are 4 easy steps to having your sailing school partipate in the program and have your results posted on the Ontario Sailing website.
-
Contact Ontario Sailing to express your school's interest in partipating in the program.
-
Your sailing school will receive materials and you will complete a self evaluation checklist on your own. Please answer all of the questions that apply to your sailing school operation and, if there are some that do not apply (N/A) please offer a detailed explanation on the last sheet of the questions.
- The sailing school will then send the completed checklist back to Ontario Sailing along with a payment of $100 + HST.
- Ontario Sailing staff will then complete a review of the checklist and give the sailing school a rating. A full review will then be done with the sailing school via telephone or in person, when applicable, by the Ontario Sailing Executive Director.

Ontario Sailors at Laser North American Championships
L-R: Robert Davis, Lee Parkhill, Greg Clunies, Evert McLaughlin
Brant Beach, NJ was home to the 2011 Laser and Laser Radial North American Championships, July 12th -15th, and also home for several Canadian athletes during this event. Ontario was well represented, having 15 athletes competing in the Laser class and 11 athletes competing in the Laser Radial class.
The venue consisted of extremely shallow waters with several weedy patches for the athletes to avoid across the race course. Day 1 consisted of three races for both the fleets and included moderate breeze from the West, South West with fairly large shifts and immobile patches of pressure spread across the course. Day 2 gifted the athletes with another three races and included very similar conditions from the day before, however they saw more mobile pressure funnelling down the course with smaller more foreseeable shifts. Day 3 brought with it some strong breeze from the North, generating tough sailing conditions with larger waves bound tightly together. As the day progressed, the breeze shifted East, generating another set of waves, mixing up the race course and making it a nightmare for some. By the time the third race of the day was sailed, the breeze was coming offshore from the island and the waves had settled down. On the fourth and final day, the breeze was initially out of the West, then a fighting sea breeze pulled the wind hard left making the only race of the day near the time limit of 90 minutes.
In total, 10 races were sailed allowing for two races to be dropped. Notable finishes from Canadian Sailing Team (CST), Ontario Sailing Team (OST) and Ontario Sailing Development Team (OSDT) athletes were:

20th Albacore Internationals 2011
September 16th - 23rd

The Albacore International Regatta returns to the waters of Lake Ontario on September 16 - 23, 2011, drawing top international sailors and Olympians from a variety of classes. This year, Canada hosts the 20th event of its kind held bi-annually at venues alternating between the United Kingdom and North America.
By simply planing back and forth on Canada's Muskoka Lakes, the late Bill Gooderham whet the appetites of cottage sailors for the Albacore in the early 60s. Fast forward to 2011 and the planing Albacore still has the same effect on sailors, though the Albacore has grown from "cottage boat" to competitive class.
With over 8,100 boats worldwide the Albacore is clearly one of the most popular dinghies sailed today. It remains popular among recreational sailors as well as racers active in hotly competitive fleets. Loaded with features, the new and improved Albacore continues to embody quality workmanship and boasts a loyal and active fleet with strong class association support. Few centerboard sailboats available today are as versatile as the Albacore. Changes made to the design over the past 50 years have broadened its accessibility, making it more affordable and easier to maneuver, while keeping it a thrill to sail.
The class is especially strong in Ontario - in Hamilton, Toronto, Nepean, and Muskoka; as well as in other provinces such as Nova Scotia and British Columbia. The Toronto fleet boasts over 100 active boats and sails mainly in the city's Harbours and on Lake Ontario. The Toronto Friday night series starts 45-60 boats on the line every week in races held from early May through September. The Albacore has evolved from its humble beginnings to become a high-performance one-design boat raced across Canada.
Over 100 boats participated in the first Internationals hosted in 1971 by the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. In 2011, the Canadian Albacore Association has again partnered with RCYC to provide a world-class event. Additional hosts for the event include members of the local Toronto fleet at Mooredale Sailing Club, St. Jamestown Sailing Club, Westwood Sailing Club, the Outer Harbour Centreboard Club and the Toronto Island Sailing Club.
The Canadian Albacore Association welcomes you to join a fleet of over 70 boats for a lively week packed with social activities and great racing!
Join us to help CELEBRATE 40 years of International competition.
See you in Toronto !

Canadian Soling Championship 2011
September 17th -18th, Port Stanley Sailing Squadron
The Canadian Soling Association and the Port Stanley Sailing Squadron extend an invitation to all Canadian and International Soling sailors to attend the 2011 Canadian Soling Championship Regatta. This years Canadian Championship will be held at the Port Stanley Sailing Squadron on September17th & 18th, 2011.
The regatta will be hosted by the Port Stanley Sailing Squadron, which will be providing free launching, mooring and support. The regatta will be a mix of high calibre racing for both modern and vintage fleets and fun shore side events. The PSSS members and the local business community are fully involved in making this event a memorable and enjoyable event for sailors and their families alike.
We are very excited that at least two teams will be travelling from
Europe
, one of which is Roman Koch. Roman has also offered to host a Soling Clinic on the two days prior to the event that includes topics such as boat setup, rigging, and lots of on the water time to practice boatspeed and tactics etc. This opportunity to learn from one of the leaders of our class is not to be missed and comes at a perfect time for sailors looking to improve in the upcoming North Americans this fall. We are expecting in excess of 20 boats with many already registered or preparing to do so, dont delay, resister early for this unique learning and racing opportunity!
Port Stanley is located on the north
shore
of
Lake Erie
, midway between
Detroit
and
Buffalo
, within an easy days drive or less from most of the North American Soling fleets. It is also only 2 hours from Abbott Boat Works in
Sarnia
.
Port Stanley
is a quaint little village with great beaches, restaurants, golf, theatre, shops, and accommodations, which makes it ideal for the whole family to relax and explore the area.
We look forward to your early registration to this event and we will be providing more detailed information on the event over the next few months. All regatta information will be posted on the Canadian Soling Association website
http://www.soling.ca/.
We look forward to hearing from you and answering any questions you may have about the regatta, clinic or related logistics.

Canadian Snipe Championship Hosted by Guelph Community Boating Club
Submitted by Gordon Richards - Chris Hains and crew Barb Mann demonstrated light wind tactical proficiency to lead the fleet with the lowest score wining the Canadian National Snipe Championships. The Hains/Mann team finished with three first places and one second place.
Canadian trophy has a significant history of Canadian, International and Olympic sailors winning this trophy over its history of 63 years. The Canadian Championship trophy dates from 1948. It was donated by John Leckie & Company, a Halifax marine supply store. Until 1962 the trophy was a Maritime Provinces monopoly since no one from Ontario went to the regatta, which was always held at a club in Nova Scotia. Don Scarfe of Armdale won it an unequaled 6 times. Doug Keary was the first from Ontario to attend in 1962 and he won it. He subsequently went to the Western Hemispheres in Brasilia where he made a successful bid for the Western Hemispheres for 1964 at Oakville. After 1962 the Canadian Nationals rotated between the Maritimes and Ontario. With rare exceptions it has been won by someone from Ontario since 1962. The demise of the Northern Yacht Club fleet in the early 1980's meant that the regatta would have to be in Ontario from then on. We took the step of making it a weekend event instead of the three or four day event that it had been in the past. It was often combined with the Ontario Open. Notable winners include Howie Richards, Ted Hains, Doug Nugent and Ian Brown. All have won it at least twice. All have represented Canada at World, Western Hemisphere and Pan-American Games regattas. Ted also represented Canada at the 1972 Olympic Games Regatta at Kiel in the International Tempest. Another notable winner is Dirk Kneulman who has represented Canada at the Western Hemispheres and Pan-Am Games and is a former World Champion in the International Etchells.
The regatta was sailed on Saturday and Sunday July 9th and 10th at a smaller lake in the Province of Ontario near Guelph but unfortunately no races were held on Saturday due to a lack of sufficient wind on the race coarse. The race committee held the sailors back until early afternoon Saturday, waiting for the wind to pick up and steady a little before sending the sailors out on the lake. Following a late lunch the race committee sent the fleet out onto the lake with a little more wind than had been seen all day long in anticipation of getting one or two races completed. Extremely light and very shifty conditions continued to prevail for the rest of the afternoon until the committee abandoned the attempt late in the day. Snipe national races are not allowed to be run if the wind velocity is not above the 4-5km level. Serious racing was put on hold until Sunday but that didnt stop the serious fun part of sailing snipes.
Racers were greeted on shore with a terrific social hour sponsored by Wellington Brewery a very good Micro brewery in Guelph Ontario with lots of beer and the opportunity to spend time with sailors and friends revisiting old times. Chris Hains ran a beer tasting with some very interesting brew. And results!
-Black Butte Porter by Deschutes Brewery, Bend, Oregon. Critics choice, good body ,not too hoppy , hint of coffee:
-Full Sail Bump in the Night by Full Sail Brewing, Hood River, Oregon. Very hoppy, bitter aftertaste, some liked it some not.
-Dead Guy Ale by Rogue Ales, Newport, Oregon. Not so hoppy, quite pleasant.
The tasting was followed by live music from a bluegrass Band called The HOOFBEATS and our own National Secretary Harri Palm as a guest guitarist. The HoofBeats graced the sailors with their music for over 1 1/2hrs until the barbeques where charged up and ready for the Famous Guelph Community Boating Clubs BBQ Your Own Steak Dinner.
Day two saw and early start to racing and a much fresher breeze for the sailors to work with. The first race began at about 10:30 am in 4 to 6 kms wind with small gusts to 10 kms in a standard windward/ leeward race coarse. These races were all hard fought with the positions changing constantly. Very seldom would any one boat take the lead and be able to keep it through a complete race. Mark rounding capability quickly became a place where many boats could quickly change positions. It was not uncommon to have mark rounding with half the fleet bunched at the windward or leeward mark and 5-6 boat lengths from the leaders. Reading the wind direction and pressure was also critical in any one race choose the wrong side and it quickly put you into a hole. The wind and pressure continued to increase all day long and in the fourth and final race it was up 10 12 kms with shifty gusts 12 -15kms.
Hains and Palm sailed very consistent series first and second place finishes but after that the positions changed a lot. Brad Anderson finished in third place with crew Kirstain Palm. Followed by Colin May/Claire Hughes from Husdon Yatch Club Hudson Que. and Gord Richards/Molly Kurvink -GCBC.
Barb Mann is recognized as the winingest female skipper or crew in both the Canadian Championships and the Ontario Championships which were sailed at the same time as the Canadians.
The Ontario Snipe Championships are usually sailed about this time of the year and is an open regatta and so includes guest sailors from out of province or out of country.
Dane Kirtpatric is recognized as the youngest Junior sailor in the fleet.
MLA Muskoka Inter-Club Youth Sailing Championship
Courtesy of Muskoka Lakes Association - The 2011 MLA Muskoka Inter-Club Youth Sailing Championship - Aphrodite Cup was held at the Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country Club on
Lake
Rosseau
on July 26, 2011.
This youth sailing championship has a long history in Muskoka and has recently been revitalized by the MLA Muskoka Sailing Network of clubs. Six racing teams attended, competing for the coveted Aphrodite Cup. The clubs who participated were Lake of Bays Sailing Club (LBSC), Lake Joseph Yacht Club (LJYC), Kettles Sailing Club (KSC), Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country Club (MLGCC), Sail Parry Sound (SPS) and South Muskoka Sailing School (SMSS).
The students (ages 10-16) had an excellent day of racing in 15-20 kph winds. There was lots of fast racing action in the Club 420 sailboat, a 2-person dinghy used by most
Ontario
sailing schools. We had a few capsizes, tight mark roundings and lots of teams hoisting their spinnakers to get maximum performance from their boat. The Race Committee, managed by MLGCC instructors Lisa Foley and Spencer Hawtin got off 5 races during the day. Each boat was allowed to drop their worst finish, counting the best 4 races for the overall scoring. All clubs were scored as a combined team to create overall sailing school placing. Racing 3 boats per club, gave us an exciting 18 boat fleet.
Racing Results:
1st place (Gold Medal): Sail Parry Sound

3. 3rd overall: Alex Benson, Luke Fenton from Kettles SC
The MLA Marine Team provided safety assistance on the race course and Race Committee support. The MLA also provided awards for the competitors, including a brand new Aphrodite Cup trophy, presented by Michael Hart, Chairman MLA Muskoka Sailing Network. MLGCC hosted an excellent BBQ and provided much needed cold drinks for the kids.
Our special thanks to host Trevor Noonan and Lisa Foley and their team at MLGCC. Congratulations from the MLA to all the sailors for a great day of racing. Photos and more information are available at

Nominate Your Local Boating Heroes Today
Courtesy of Boating Industry Canada -
The Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) invites you to have your own local boating safety advocate, or hero recognized for their outstanding or life saving efforts in the field of boating safety and environmental stewardship. They may have pulled someone to safety from a capsized boat, taught school children about the importance of always wearing a lifejacket or helped to keep the waterways clean and free of pollutants and debris. Whatever they have contributed to the boating community, we want you to nominate them!
The Canadian Safe Boating Awards (CASBAs) are like the Peoples Choice Awards of Safe Boating. They are an annual awards ceremony and dinner which takes place every January to recognize the efforts of the general public, volunteers, professionals, agencies and organizations who have distinguished themselves in the fields of boating safety and environmental stewardship. Maybe you or the company you work for has developed a product that enhances boating safety or maybe you or someone you know was walking along the beach, heard someone calling for help and decided to react. The CASBA awards span a number of categories including:
- "Rescue of the Year"
- "Marine Professional of the Year"
- "Top Volunteer Dedicated to Safe Boating"
- "Best Boating Safety Initiative"
- "Safeguarding the Environment"
- "Marine Industry"
- Visible PFD Wear in Advertising
- Best Media Contribution to Boating Safety
What makes the CASBAs so very special is that nominations come from people like YOU! No matter where you live from Victoria to St. Johns, please keep your eyes and ears open and submit your nomination(s).
Help the Canadian Safe Boating Council say thank-you to deserving Canadians for their stellar efforts and let them know that their work is greatly appreciated. Visit
http://www.csbc.ca/ under Events for more information about the CASBAs and to submit your nomination or contact Ian Gilson (905)719-5152. Anyone wishing to attend the CASBAs can also register through this site.

Prime Minister's Volunteer Awards
The best solutions to the challenges facing Canadas communities are often found locally. For this reason, in January 2011, the Prime Minister announced the creation of the Prime Ministers Volunteer Awards to recognize the enormous contribution volunteers make to Canada. The Government of Canada also expressed its interest in looking to innovative charities and forward-thinking private-sector companies to partner on new approaches to many social challenges.
The Prime Ministers Volunteer Awards recognize the exceptional contributions of volunteers, local businesses and innovative not-for-profit organizations in improving the well-being of families and their communities.
The Prime Ministers Volunteer Awards program consists of 17 awards in total, 2 at the national level and 15 at the regional level. The Awards highlight best practices in community leadership and encourage partnerships across sectors. The goal of the Awards is to inspire Canadians from all walks of life to find new ways of making a difference in their communities.
If you know a volunteer, innovative not-for-profit organization or a local business that makes a positive impact on your community, you can nominate them today! Nominations are open until September 9, 2011.
You can find more information on the Awards by following the links below:
The deadline for nominations is midnight (EDT) on September 9, 2011. Nominations submitted by mail must be postmarked no later than the deadline.
