Important Reminder for Sailing School Directors & Instructors
Reminder to Sailing School Directors & Dinghy Instructors
This year Ontario Sailing implemented the new Canadian Yachting Association instructor system for dinghy instructors. One of the biggest changes in the new system is that the linear progression, for example Green to Blue to Red, has been taken out. Now a potential coach can enter the coaching system whereever they wish as long as they meet the required prerequisites. Another large change, based on the non-linear system, is that a coach with one level cannot certify students at another level. In the old system as the coach moved "up" in certification they could certify the students at the lower level they had already taken. In the new system someone who is only a certified Bronze Sail Coach can only certify Bronze IV and V.
Those instructors who are a current Green, Blue, Red or Orange instructor in the old system are still valid in their certification and will still be able to certify their current level plus those below them.
In order for an instructor to be able to certify students and order certificates and seals from Ontario Sailing, they must be both:
a) registered with the CYA (having paid their dues for 2009) and
b) valid
Being valid means having your prerequisites updated and current. It is possible for someone to be valid and registered at the beginning of sailing season and then become invalid part way through the season. If you paid your dues on May 31st, but your First Aid expired on June 20th, you are no longer a valid instructor. This means that you cannot certify students after June 20th. Ontario Sailing will not issue seals/certificates to students taught by invalid instructors. According to CYA standards, First Aid/CPR and Swim Awards are valid for three years from the date of certification (unless otherwise stated on the certificate).
It is highly recommended that all sailing schools confirm that all of their instructors are Registered with the CYA and that the instructors' swimming and first aid certificates will be valid for the entirety of the sailing season.
Ontario Sailing is happy to check on instructors' status for either the sailing school or the instructor themselves. If you have any questions about Instructor levels or prerequisites please contact Kathy Chamoun at 1-888-672-7245 ext. 227 or via email.
